My 2 Cents on “BEST PRACTICES”

When are best practices really best practices? Best practice by definition is a method that has been used several times so that it becomes a benchmark procedure that is expected to yield optimum results. In order for the practice to be “best” it must, by comparison show results superior to those achieved with other methods. This means that the practice by its nature is not new….just proven.

By the time then that best practices get into mainstream observation they are old.

Given that the insight of brain and other innovations lead to the development of better procedures and methods, then the so called best practices are no longer the best but merely a springboard for improvement. Dwelling on these practices will stifle innovation. Moreover a method or practice that works in one set of circumstances might be detrimental in another set of circumstances.

So, when something is called a best practice we must ask who is labeling this practice best. What makes this practice best?

Best practices are legacy based thinking and innovations assist it extricating your mind from legacy based methodologies.
